What is functional testing?

While many health concerns can be effectively supported through thorough case taking and comprehensive clinical assessment, functional testing can sometimes provide valuable insights into what may be occurring beneath the surface. These evidence based assessments can be particularly helpful when symptoms are persistent, complex, or when previous treatments have not provided the improvements you were hoping for.

Functional testing allows us to explore the physiological patterns influencing your health in greater depth, helping to identify underlying contributors to concerns such as digestive dysfunction, hormonal imbalances, fatigue, metabolic disturbances, and mood changes. By gathering objective data about how your body is functioning, these assessments can reduce much of the guesswork and guide more precise and personalised treatment strategies.

When these insights are combined with the traditional wisdom of herbal medicine, personalised nutrition and supportive lifestyle strategies, we are able to develop targeted treatment plans designed to address root causes and support long term balance, resilience, and overall wellbeing.

Functional testing is only recommended when it will provide meaningful insights into your health and help guide a more targeted and effective treatment approach.

Below is a list of some of the testing I provide in my clinic:

  • Comprehensive hormone testing for women and men offers a detailed picture of how hormonal balance is influencing energy, mood, metabolism, body composition, sexual health, and long-term wellbeing. For women, testing commonly includes oestrogen, progesterone, testosterone, SHBG, LH and FSH to assess menstrual health, fertility, PMS, perimenopause, menopause, and symptoms such as weight changes, acne, mood shifts, and sleep disruption. For men, key hormones such as testosterone, free testosterone, oestrogen, LH and FSH are evaluated to understand libido, muscle mass, motivation, mood, metabolic health, and age-related hormonal decline. In both women and men, adrenal hormones like cortisol and DHEA are assessed to understand stress response, fatigue, inflammation, and blood sugar regulation, while thyroid hormones (TSH, free T4, free T3, and antibodies) provide insight into metabolic rate, weight regulation, temperature control, and cognitive function. When relevant, insulin and other metabolic markers are included to assess hormonal drivers of weight gain, inflammation, and chronic disease risk. By assessing these hormones together and in context, comprehensive hormone testing reveals patterns such as hormonal depletion, excess, or dysregulation that may be missed on standard testing, allowing for personalised, root-cause targeted care rather than symptom management alone

  • An extensive thyroid panel goes beyond a basic TSH test to provide a complete picture of how the thyroid is functioning and how thyroid hormones are being produced, converted, and used by the body. This type of testing typically includes TSH, free T4, free T3, reverse T3, and thyroid antibodies (TPO and thyroglobulin antibodies) to assess thyroid output, hormone conversion, autoimmune activity, and inflammatory stress on the thyroid. By looking at these markers together, an extensive thyroid panel can identify patterns such as subclinical hypothyroidism, impaired T4–T3 conversion, autoimmune thyroid conditions or thyroid-driven fatigue, weight changes, hair loss, mood changes and temperature sensitivity. This comprehensive approach allows for more precise, personalised treatment by addressing the underlying drivers of thyroid dysfunction rather than relying on a single marker or symptom-based management.

  • Methylation testing examines how efficiently your body carries out one of its most essential biochemical processes, methylation, which affects detoxification, hormone metabolism, neurotransmitter balance, energy production, and gene expression. This type of testing often assesses genetic variants involved in methylation pathways along with key biochemical markers such as homocysteine, B-vitamin status, and detoxification capacity. Impaired or overburdened methylation can contribute to symptoms including fatigue, anxiety, low mood, hormonal imbalances, poor stress tolerance, inflammation, and difficulty clearing toxins. By understanding your individual methylation patterns methylation testing allows for highly personalised nutritional, supplement, and lifestyle strategies that support optimal cellular function and long-term health, rather than applying a one-size-fits-all approach.

  • Genetic testing using DNA analysis provides insight into how your unique genetic blueprint influences nutrient requirements, detoxification pathways, hormone metabolism, inflammation, stress response, and disease risk. Rather than predicting destiny this type of testing identifies genetic variations that may increase demand on certain biochemical pathways helping explain why some people respond differently to diet, supplements, medications, and lifestyle factors. By understanding these inherited tendencies DNA analysis allows for highly personalised, preventative care guiding targeted nutrition, supplementation and lifestyle strategies that work with your genetics to optimise health, resilience, and long-term wellbeing.

  • Gut and microbiome testing provides a comprehensive assessment of digestive function and the balance of microorganisms living within the gastrointestinal tract. This type of testing evaluates beneficial and opportunistic bacteria, yeast, parasites, markers of inflammation, digestive enzyme activity, gut immune function and intestinal permeability. Imbalances within the microbiome can contribute to symptoms such as bloating, reflux, irregular bowel habits, fatigue, skin issues, mood changes, hormonal disruption and immune dysfunction. By identifying specific patterns of dysbiosis, infection, or impaired digestion, gut and microbiome testing allows for targeted personalised treatment strategies that restore gut integrity, improve nutrient absorption, and support whole-body health recognising the gut as a central driver of overall wellbeing.

  • Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis (HTMA) is a powerful tool that provides a window into your body’s long-term mineral balance and metabolic function. Unlike blood tests, which show a snapshot of your current nutrient levels, HTMA reflects mineral patterns over weeks to months, helping reveal underlying imbalances that may contribute to fatigue, stress, hormone issues or metabolic challenges.

By analyzing a small sample of hair, HTMA measures essential minerals like calcium, magnesium, zinc and iron, as well as toxic metals such as lead, mercury, and arsenic to name a few. These results can help identify nutrient deficiencies, mineral excesses and patterns of stress or metabolic slowdown allowing for highly personalized nutritional, lifestyle and supplementation strategies.

In my clinic HTMA is used as part of a comprehensive approach to optimise your health, restore balance and support long-term vitality. It’s a simple, non-invasive test that provides deep insights into your body’s chemistry and helps guide effective, evidence-informed wellness plans.

  • While a number of functional tests are outlined above, these represent only some of the tools available to help investigate underlying health concerns. Every person’s health history, symptoms and physiology are unique and for this reason the most appropriate testing will always depend on your individual presentation. During your consultation, I undertake a comprehensive clinical assessment to determine whether testing may provide valuable insights into the drivers of your symptoms. In some cases, this may involve exploring additional areas such as nutrient status, metabolic health, cardiovascular health, digestive function, hormone balance, genetic pathways, or other physiological markers that can influence overall wellbeing. By selecting the most appropriate testing for your specific situation, we can gain a clearer understanding of the factors affecting your health and develop a personalised treatment plan that integrates herbal medicine, nutrition, and lifestyle strategies to support meaningful and lasting improvements

  • Not everyone requires functional testing, and testing is never recommended unless it is likely to provide meaningful insights into your health. In many cases, a detailed consultation, comprehensive clinical assessment and a thorough exploration of your symptoms, health history, nutrition and lifestyle can already reveal important patterns that guide treatment.

However, when symptoms are persistent, complex or have not responded to previous approaches, functional testing can provide valuable clarity. These assessments allow us to explore underlying physiological factors that may not always be visible through symptoms alone, such as patterns in digestion, metabolism, hormone balance, nervous system function or nutrient status.

If testing is appropriate for your situation I will explain the options available, why a particular test may be helpful and how the results can guide a more targeted and personalised treatment plan. The goal of testing is always to provide deeper understanding, remove unnecessary guesswork and support strategies that lead to more effective and lasting improvements in health.

By combining the insights gained from functional testing with the traditional wisdom of herbal medicine, personalised nutrition, and lifestyle support, we can develop an integrative approach that supports your body’s natural capacity to restore balance and resilience.
